Dr. Marshall was born and raised in Oil City, Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, Betsy relocated to Coastal Virginia and has since practiced small animal medicine – both emergency and private practice – for the past 10+ years.

She has many favorite parts about working with animals and in the hospital! She especially loves puppy kisses, watching animals get better, getting to know their owners, and observing employees develop and grow.

Betsy shares her home with four wonderful pets:

  • Bean is a very affectionate Beagle rescue from the VA Beach SPCA. He loves sunshine, snacks, and belly rubs, and is a master at breaking all food puzzles to get to his treats.
  • Poppy, an Australian Shepherd, loves everything about life, but her greatest joy is her red ball—your sole purpose, in her eyes, is to throw it!
  • Benny is a very affectionate and cuddly Domestic Short Hair rescued from the Norfolk SPCA. He's quite smart and quickly solves any food puzzle put before him.
  • Bizzie, another Domestic Short Hair rescued from Ghent Vet during COVID, has a super loud purr. While not a fan of being held, she's very curious and affectionate from a few feet away. Her biggest enemies are Poppy and any bugs that dare enter the house.

When she's not at work, Betsy's favorite thing to do is reading, though she wishes she had more time for other beloved hobbies. Her go-to comfort "food" or favorite snack is a refreshing Cherry Coke.

A fun and surprising fact about Betsy is that she loves video games. She'd happily spend all day playing them, though she admits she'd be "shackled with guilt for [her] loss of productivity." What always makes her day better is "no extractions!"

Betsy's favorite season is summer because she is "always cold," and it's the only time of year she isn't "miserably cold."

Her professional interests include emergency medicine and critical care, dentistry, surgery, and pain management. She opened Ghent Veterinary Hospital in 2015 as a brand new practice in Norfolk and a new flagship hospital, Granby Veterinary Hospital, in early 2024.
